Metallica is battling back against bootleggers by taking legal action to halt the release of an unauthorized new album entitled "Bay Area Thrashers." According to Metallica's management company, the material on "Thrashers" originates from demo recordings an earlier line-up of the band made in 1982. Metallica, who owns the rights to the demos, is upset with the bootleg's poor sound quality, as well as the way the demos have been fraudulently altered to make them appear as if they contained material from a live show. "Metallica considers the album to be an inferior product, illicitly acquired and sonically butchered," states a press release for the group, which also claims that the album "attempts to exploit the Metallica name ... at the expense of its fans." The band has also contacted the anti-bootlegging arms of the British Phonograph Institute and the Recording Industry Association of America to help stop the distribution of the "deceitful release." Credit goes out to MTV News for this story. |

In six-degrees-of-separation news, there appears to be a unique, if not immediately obvious, connection between Oscar nominee and Hollywood golden boy Matt Damon and metal mainstays Metallica. Damon recently told "Movieline" magazine that the love of his life was a doctor with whom he had carried on a long-distance relationship for years. Damon would not reveal the name of the woman, but did tell the magazine that she went on to marry "a fucking rock star who's got $80 million and his own jet... a bad rock star too." Those who have seen Damon's multiple Oscar-nominated film "Good Will Hunting" will recall that the actor/screenwriter's on-screen love interest in that movie is also a doctor played by Minnie Driver. Damon has denied that the character is not named after anyone in real life, but Driver's character (named Skylar) shares the same first name and occupation as the wife of Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich. A publicist for Metallica confirmed that the drummer's wife is in fact Damon's old flame. For the record, the normally loquacious Lars had no comment on being dissed by Damon. |
The first Metallica US date is confirmed.

UPDATE: 03.16.98 Metallica will also be playing the Winnebago County Fairgrounds in Rockford, IL on July 5th and they'll be in Milwaukee, WI on July 26th. Tickets will be available on Saturday.
